Peru is the original source of gossypium barbadense, better known as extra-long staple cotton. Signs of it being cultivated date back to 4200 BC in a small village on the Peruvian coast. It is a very different fibre from the type of cotton more typically used in garment production today, and in fact it is of such high quality that in Peru it is considered a luxury fabric.
