Adding natural fertilisers to soil is an agricultural tradition that has been practised in Peru for more than a thousand years. One of the most potent forms of natural fertiliser is guano – droppings from seabirds – which is harvested from rocks and islands off the coast. Highly potent, because of the high concentration of phosphorous and nitrates, guano is still in use and highly valued today.
