John Smedley has always taken great care to minimise its environmental impacts. Knitting faults are unwound and yarn is re-used or recycled; steam from the factory is used to help heat the building; and low energy lighting has been installed throughout the company. Architecture and technology have also been used to reduce energy demands, maximising natural daylight and controlling heating to within 0.1°.
